• What are some of the best lessons you've learned since opening your cinema?

To have confidence in your vision and judgement – very, very few films please everyone! Learn from your mistakes - build an understanding of your audience and focus your marketing. Make sure you have strong support from a few inspiring people who understand and share your vision with good humour and understanding.

 

• What advice would you give to others hoping to open a doc cinema in their community?

Be very clear about what you want to achieve, stay strong and don’t be discouraged – it takes time to build an audience and doc community. Try not to be too ambitious too soon, especially regarding the venue. Most importantly make partnerships and collect supporters - share ideas and and then enjoy seeing your project grow organically.
